This work was commissioned by Bernard Towson in the memory of his late brother Ron. Bernard chose the poem Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas as he felt it best represented his brother. The work is in two movements

An Unkempt Suite

Belinda Liew - Cello, Chris Nankervis - Piano

This three movement work for piano and cello that is largely based of the melody to the Nimrod variation from Elgar's Enigma Variations.
The first movement, Ricercar, starts with dissected version of Elgar's melody that gradually comes into focus by the end.
The mammoth second movement, called Chaconne, explores Elgar's theme almost endlessly on repeat, but in 8 different styles, changing back and forth in an increasingly wild manner.
The short but energetic final movement, Toccata, puts Elgar to the side and plays with some of the ideas set up in the first movement.

The text for this piece comes from two speeches. One by William Safire, written for Richard Nixon in the event that the moon landing failed, the other was a British NATO war exercise in the 1980s that was a prediction of what might happen if another world war would break out, including a speech the Queen might deliver on the eve of the war.
